A Week of Silence and Presence over New Year

27 December 2026 – 2 January 2027

From 27 December to 2 January, Färjås Yogaretreats invites a small group to spend the turning of the year in silence, meditation and contemplative practice.

The retreat is rooted in simplicity, nature and living contemplative traditions. Through mauna (silence), meditation, yoga, yoga nidra, tea ceremonies, shared vegetarian meals, sauna and time in nature, we step away from the momentum of everyday life and allow space for stillness, reflection and a deeper connection with the heart.

Färjås Yogaretreats is situated between the nature reserves of Vallda Sandö and Hördalen on the Swedish west coast, nestled along the mountain with forest behind us and views across coastal meadows towards the sea.

Since 2011, silent meditation retreats have been at the heart of what we offer. In many ways, they express the essence of Färjås Yogaretreats:

_ Authentic teachings and lived practice: more than twenty-five years of experience teaching and practising yoga, tantra and meditation, with an emphasis on balancing theory and direct experience. The retreats draw inspiration from Shaiva Tantra, Nordic Stav and Zuowang Dao.

- Natural health and regeneration: silence, sauna, cold bathing, warm fires, regenerative growing, seasonal vegetarian food and tea ceremonies.

- Personal connection: an individual preparatory conversation before the retreat and the possibility of follow-up afterwards, allowing us to meet each participant where they are.

In keeping with our philosophy of transparent pricing, all teachings are offered freely. Participants pay only for accommodation, meals and tea ceremonies.

SILENCE

Many contemplative traditions value periods of silence as a way of allowing the mind to settle, reducing external stimulation and listening more closely to what normally remains unheard.

Periodic silence, mauna, can be understood as a form of fasting for the mind. As habitual conversation and mental commentary gradually quieten, a deeper sense of peace, creativity and inner freedom may begin to emerge.

Through language, we continually define ourselves and the world around us through concepts, stories and roles. Letting go of speaking for a period of time can open a different kind of presence — less conceptual, less divided and more immediate.

During the retreat, we set aside conversation, phones, mirrors and ordinary social interaction. Pen and paper are available for any necessary practical communication with the retreat team.

Questions arising from meditation may also be written down and will be addressed during the guidance sessions.

MEDITATION

Meditation lies at the heart of many contemplative traditions. It can be approached as an art, a discipline or a mystery. Learning to meditate takes time, patience and practice.

There are many forms of meditation. One useful distinction is between dual and non-dual approaches. In dual meditation, attention rests upon an object of meditation. In non-dual meditation, the apparent division between subject and object is gradually allowed to soften or dissolve.

The silent meditation retreats at Färjås Yogaretreats are oriented towards this non-dual approach, supported by mauna and practices informed by Shaiva Tantra, Nordic Stav and Zuowang Dao.

The emphasis is not on accumulating unusual experiences, but on learning to rest more deeply in awareness itself.

YOGA

The yoga sessions are designed to strengthen, open and relax the body between longer periods of sitting meditation.

Hatha yoga postures (asanas) are combined with gentle warm-ups, movement and deep relaxation. The program also includes yoga nidra, supporting restoration and allowing the effects of meditation to settle more deeply into the body.

No previous experience of yoga is required.

TEA CEREMONY

Each morning begins with a quiet tea ceremony.

During the ceremony, we contemplate the meeting of the elements through water, fire, earth, air, tea and human presence. Beauty and contemplation are important aspects of the retreat and offer another way of returning to the heart and to immediate experience.

We primarily drink dark, fermented Chinese teas — Pu’erh and Liu Bao — including aged teas from the 1980s and 1990s.

GUIDANCE

Short daily sessions offer practical guidance in meditation together with perspectives on the Self (ātman), awareness and non-duality.

Participants are encouraged to write down questions, observations and contemplations that arise during the silence. These may be addressed during the daily guidance sessions, allowing for individual questions and deeper exploration without interrupting the shared silence.

LANGUAGE

The retreat will be held in Swedish if all participants understand Swedish. Otherwise, the teaching and guidance will be in English.

You are always welcome to communicate with us in either Swedish or English.

ACCOMMODATION

Accommodation is provided in shared rooms and cabins, normally with another participant of the same sex.

A limited number of private rooms and cabins are also available. Couples, friends and small groups are welcome to attend together and share accommodation.

Färjås Yogaretreats is characterised by natural simplicity and silence, inspired both by contemplative traditions and by the surrounding landscape.

Bathrooms are located in the main house, while our compost toilets are outdoors. Bed linen and towels are included.

TRANSPARENT PRICING

At Färjås Yogaretreats, we believe that contemplative teachings and practices should be accessible without placing a commercial price on them.

For this reason, we do not charge for meditation guidance, yoga or the teachings offered during our retreats.

You pay only for accommodation, meals and tea ceremonies. The teachings themselves are offered freely.

The standard retreat price includes shared accommodation. Those who prefer a private room or cabin may choose this at an additional cost, subject to availability.

This approach reflects our understanding of contemplative practice as something to be shared rather than sold.

Those who wish to support the continuation of our teaching and retreat activities are welcome to make a voluntary donation, but there is no expectation or obligation to do so.

FOOD & DIETS

Färjås Yogaretreats serves vegetarian food and is free from alcohol, nicotine and coffee.

Whenever possible, we use vegetables and herbs from our own gardens together with locally sourced and organic produce. Meals follow the season and are prepared from scratch.

The food is intended to support meditation: nourishing and grounding, yet simple and easy to digest.

Throughout the retreat, you are also welcome to enjoy a wide variety of home-dried and fermented herbal teas, alongside teas sourced directly from producers and suppliers in Asia.

DIGITAL DETOX

Leaving the phone aside is a mandatory part of our silent meditation retreats.

Digital silence supports mauna by reducing external stimulation and habitual distraction, allowing the mind to settle more naturally into stillness.

To make the transition easier, we also recommend gently reducing screen time and other highly stimulating activities during the days before the retreat. A similar period of simplicity afterwards can help the experience become more fully integrated into everyday life.

PREPARATION & REQUIREMENTS

No previous experience of meditation or yoga is required.

The retreat is open to anyone who feels drawn to explore silent meditation more deeply and to reconnect with the heart through stillness, simplicity and practice.

We all respond differently to extended silence and meditation. If you are curious but uncertain whether this retreat is right for you, you are warmly welcome to contact us beforehand.
